Book Description

The purpose of this e-book, titled “A Minimalist Ontology of the Natural World” (PDF), is to determine which commitments are minimum needed in order to produce an ontology of the natural world that is consistent with all of the well-established physical theories of the present day. An ontology of the natural world that is defined just by the following two axioms is what we propose here.

  1. The matter points are fixed, but the distances between them are always expanding and contracting.
  2. There exist distance connections that individuate simple objects, and those points of matter are what we call them.

Everything else is a method for representing the shift in the distance relations in a way that is both as informative and as straightforward as is humanly possible. This minimalist ontology is worked out in the ebook in both philosophical and mathematical terms, and it demonstrates how one can comprehend classical mechanics, quantum field theory, and relativistic physics by using this ontology as a foundation for their understanding. Along the way, we want to accomplish the following four subsidiary goals: (a) to make a case for holistic individuation of the basic objects (ontic structural realism); (b) to work out a new version of Humeanism, dubbed Super-Humeanism, that does not believe in the existence of natural properties; (c) to set out an ontology of quantum physics that is an alternative to quantum state realism and that avoids any ontological dualism of particles and fields
