The Dutch Textbook Obstetrie en Gynaecologie; de voortplanting van de mens has been the most influential handbook in Dutch medical and midwifery schools since 1993. The most recent edition, The Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology: a life course approach (PDF), was published in 2013.
A life course approach to women's health is integrated into the clinical practice of obstetrics and gynecology for the very first time in this most recent version of the textbook on the subject. It is said that life is a continuum “from the cradle to the grave,” and that each stage of life has an impact on an individual's welfare and health as well as the wellbeing and health of subsequent generations. This method of providing obstetric and gynecological patient care offers a road toward healthy aging, focusing in particular on lifestyle, preventive, and the social context of the patient's condition. Women's healthcare practitioners will be able to provide future care in a manner that is far more multidisciplinary if they manage not only the sickness but also the health of the community.
The organization and material of the electronic textbook have both been extensively reworked and rewritten in accordance with the life course concept. In addition, an exceptional group of authors has significantly reduced the book's page count. The illustrative material has also been updated, and the new ebook version includes both 3D video animations and films demonstrating five different surgical procedures.
The electronic textbook should serve as a reference not only for students studying midwifery and medicine, but also for gynecologists in training and other clinicians who have the privilege of caring for women and their families from the earliest moments of existence forward.
